Country Boots

Tall, jodhpur, country and yard boots, plus socks, boot care and kids' sizes — all in one place.

Country boots are the tall, waterproof boots that live by the back door — built for the yard, dog walks, winter turnout duties and casual riding. Most are waterproof leather with warm linings and grippy soles, with lace-top (field) styles for an adjustable fit and wide-calf options for comfort over jeans. Just Horse Riders stocks them from brands including Dublin, Brogini, Rhinegold, Shires and our own Englander Equestrian, from around £54.

In a hurry? For everyday yard-and-walking use, choose a waterproof leather country boot in your normal shoe size — and check the calf measurement if you'll wear them over jeans (wide-leg versions exist). Most have a proper heel, so they double up for casual riding too.

Choosing country boots

Choice What it means
Waterproof leather The classic — warm, weatherproof and smart enough for the pub walk
Lace-top / field style Adjustable fit through the ankle and instep
Wide-calf versions Room for jeans or a generous calf
Mid-calf styles Lighter, easier on and off — great for spring and autumn

Can you ride in country boots?

Most country boots have a defined heel and a fairly smooth sole, so they're fine for casual hacking — check the individual product if you're unsure. For schooling and competing you'll still want proper tall riding boots or jodhpur boots.

Making them last

Rinse mud off rather than letting it dry in, let them dry naturally away from direct heat, and feed the leather with a conditioner every few weeks in winter. A yearly re-proof keeps the waterproofing sharp.

Frequently asked questions

Are country boots waterproof?

Proper country boots are, yes — waterproof leather or membrane-lined construction is the point of them. Keep the waterproofing working with regular cleaning and an occasional re-proof.

Can you horse ride in country boots?

For casual hacking, mostly yes — they have a heel and a riding-friendly sole. For schooling, lessons and competition, switch to proper riding boots. Check the product notes if in doubt.

How do I know if I need a wide calf?

Measure around the widest part of your calf (over the trousers you'll wear) and compare with the brand's calf measurement. If you're near the top of the range or wear them over jeans, go wide — a tall boot that pinches never gets worn.

How do I care for leather country boots?

Rinse mud off after wet walks, dry naturally away from radiators, and condition the leather every few weeks in heavy use. Re-proof once a year to keep them beading water.
