What does a gel pad actually do?
A gel pad is a thin, flexible layer that sits under the saddle or under a half pad. The gel squashes and spreads as the horse moves, which helps soften the jolt of each stride and helps keep the saddle from creeping forward or sideways. It is a comfort and stability aid rather than a fix for a saddle that does not fit: if your horse is sore, reactive to grooming or changing shape, book a qualified saddle fitter or speak to your vet before adding padding.
Gel, foam or grip — what is the difference?
Gel gives you cushioning with very little bulk, so it changes the feel of your saddle least. Foam-filled options such as the ProSorb pads give you more depth and a pocketed design, so there is more room to adjust how the pad sits. Grip-focused pads such as the X-Grip and Soft Shell Anti Slip squares are aimed at keeping everything where you put it. Many riders end up using a grippy square underneath and a cushioning half pad on top.
Half pad or full saddle square?
A half pad covers only the area under the saddle itself and is usually used on top of your normal square, so you keep your existing colours and add cushioning. A full square replaces the numnah you already use and is cut to match a saddle type — dressage, close contact, GP or EuroJump. If you already own squares you like, start with a half pad such as the ProSorb Plain 2 Pocket Half Pad at £59.95. If your current square is tired or slipping, a shaped square such as the X-Grip Silicone Dressage Square at £79.95 does both jobs at once.
Does the cut of the square really matter?
Yes. A dressage square is cut long and straight to follow a dressage flap; a close contact or EuroJump square is cut forward to sit under a jumping flap without bunching. Using the wrong shape leaves the pad edge rubbing against the flap or poking out awkwardly, which is where a lot of pad wear comes from. Match the cut to the saddle you actually ride in most.
How do you stop a saddle slipping?
Slip usually has more than one cause. Check the girth and girth straps first, then the saddle balance, then the pad. A grippy pad such as an X-Grip or Soft Shell Anti Slip square helps a lot on a horse with a flat back or wide barrel, and a gel layer adds friction without adding thickness. What padding cannot do is hold a saddle that is genuinely too wide or sitting on the wrong part of the back — that needs a fitter.
Do LeMieux pads fit my saddle?
LeMieux pads are sized by saddle type and by size. Squares in stock here come in Large or One Size, and the half pads come in Medium or Large depending on the range — the Matrix Support Dressage Half Pad, for example, is Large only. As a rough guide, Medium suits smaller, narrower saddles and Large suits bigger seats and broader horses — but check the size guide on each product page, because the cut varies between ranges. If you are between sizes or fitting an unusual saddle, get in touch and our team will help.
LeMieux gel pad questions, answered
Do LeMieux gel pads stop the saddle slipping?
They help. Gel adds grip and cushioning without much thickness, and the grip-focused squares such as the LeMieux X-Grip Silicone Dressage Square (£79.95) or the Soft Shell Anti Slip Dressage Square (£79.95) are designed with slip in mind. A pad cannot correct a saddle that is too wide or badly balanced, so if slipping is severe or new, have the saddle checked by a qualified fitter first.
What is the cheapest LeMieux pad in this collection?
At the time of writing, the lowest in-stock price is £59.95 for the LeMieux ProSorb Plain 2 Pocket Half Pad in black, available in medium and large. Most of the shaped squares sit at £79.95 to £84.95, with the X-Grip Twin Sided EuroJump Square at £89.95. Prices on the grid above are always current.
Should I choose a half pad or a full saddle square?
Choose a half pad if you already have squares you like and simply want extra cushioning under the saddle — the ProSorb Plain 2 Pocket Half Pad (£59.95) or the Matrix Support Dressage Half Pad (£79.95) both layer over an existing square. Choose a full square, such as the ProSorb Plain 2 Pocket GP Square (£84.95), if you want one pad that does the whole job and matches your saddle’s cut.
Will a pad change how my saddle fits?
Any pad adds a little material between saddle and horse, so a saddle that is already snug can feel tighter with a thick half pad underneath. Gel and thin grip pads change the fit least. If your saddle is a close fit, add padding cautiously and ask a qualified saddle fitter to check the result — padding is there to support comfort, not to compensate for a saddle that no longer fits.
How do I look after a LeMieux pad?
Brush off hair and dried sweat after riding and let the pad dry naturally away from direct heat, which keeps the shape and the grip surface in good order. Washing instructions differ between the gel, quilted and lambskin-trimmed ranges, so follow the care label sewn into your pad rather than a general rule. If a label is missing, get in touch and our team will help.
