What size reins do I need?
Rein size follows bridle size rather than the horse's height on its own. As a rough guide, pony fits ponies up to roughly 14.2hh, cob suits most cobs and shorter-necked horses, and full suits most 16hh-plus horses. If your horse sits between sizes, the longer option is usually safer - a rein that is slightly long can be held further down, but a rein that is too short leaves you no room to give.

Rubber or leather - which grips better?
Rubber grips better when your hands or the reins are wet, which is why rubber and half-rubber reins are the popular choice for British winters and for jumping. Leather looks smarter and softens beautifully with use, but a plain leather rein can slip through wet gloves.
