Men's jodhpurs and breeches are riding trousers cut for the saddle — close-fitting, stretchy and free of the thick inner-leg seams that make ordinary trousers uncomfortable on a horse. Three choices matter: jodhpurs or breeches (a full-length leg for short boots, or a cropped leg that sits flat under tall boots or half chaps), knee grip (a plain self seat, silicone or gel knee patches, or a full seat) and fabric weight (lightweight and quick-drying for summer, thermal or softshell for a British winter). Just Horse Riders stocks men's jodhpurs, breeches and riding trousers from brands including Shires, John Whitaker, Premier Equine and Ariat, from around £20.

In a hurry? A pair of silicone knee-patch breeches in navy or beige suits most men for everyday riding. The Aubrion Walton Breeches – Gents (from £54.00) are lightweight, quick-drying and smart enough for competition.

Choosing men's jodhpurs and breeches

Choice What it means
Jodhpurs Full-length leg worn with short jodhpur boots, usually in a cotton-stretch fabric with a plain self seat. The traditional, hard-wearing choice for yard work and hacking.
Breeches Finish mid-calf with a close-fitting cuff that sits smoothly under tall boots or half chaps. What most men school and compete in — the bulk of this collection.
Knee grip A self seat is plain fabric and easiest to move in; silicone or gel knee patches add hold in the saddle; a full seat gives the most contact and is favoured for dressage.
Fabric weight Lightweight, quick-drying fabrics for summer; thermal and softshell versions for winter; waterproof over-trousers to pull on over the top for wet yard jobs.
Sizing Men's pairs are sized by waist in inches — roughly 26–42″ across this range — and some styles come in Regular and Long leg lengths.

Getting the fit right

Start from your jeans waist size — men's jodhpurs and breeches are sized in inches, and most styles here run from 26″ to 42″. The cut is not the same as jeans, though: the rise is higher at the back so the waistband stays put when you lean forward, and the seat is shaped for sitting in a saddle rather than a chair. They should feel snug everywhere without digging in; the four-way stretch fabric does the work. If you are between sizes, go up rather than down, and if you are long in the leg look for styles offered in Regular and Long lengths, such as Ariat's Tri Factor range. In the saddle, a knee patch should sit squarely over your knee — if it lands well below, the leg is too long for you.

What most men actually ride in

Day to day, most men ride in knee-patch breeches in navy, black or beige — enough grip for schooling, smart enough for a lesson, and they wash and dry quickly. Plain self-seat jodhpurs are the cheaper option for yard work and hacking in short boots. Pull-on riding tights, common in women's ranges, are still rare in men's sizing, so breeches fill that role. For competition, beige is the usual choice at grass-roots level. Through winter, a thermal pair such as the Rhinegold Elite Mens Thermal Breeches (from £39.11) or a set of waterproof over-trousers worn over your normal pair will keep you riding through the wet months.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between men's jodhpurs and breeches?

Jodhpurs are full-length and worn with short jodhpur boots; breeches finish mid-calf with a close cuff designed to sit smoothly under tall boots or half chaps. For men, breeches are the more common choice — most of this collection is breeches — while jodhpurs suit yard work and riders who prefer short boots.

What size should I buy if I wear a thirty-four inch jean?

Start with the same waist size — men's jodhpurs and breeches are sized by waist in inches, typically 26″ to 42″ across this range. They should feel closer-fitting than jeans, and the stretch fabric means that is comfortable rather than restrictive. If you are between sizes, go up one; if you are tall, pick a style that comes in a Long leg length.

Do men wear riding tights?

Pull-on riding tights are popular in women's ranges but still unusual in men's sizing, and this collection is almost entirely conventional jodhpurs and breeches. If you want that lighter, legging-like feel, a lightweight four-way-stretch breech such as the Aubrion Walton is the closest men's equivalent.

What colour breeches should men wear for competition?

Beige is the safe answer for most disciplines at grass-roots level, with white generally reserved for dressage and show jumping at higher levels — check your discipline's rule book if in doubt. For everyday schooling, navy, black and grey hide dirt far better between washes.
