Mackey Classic Padded Flash Noseband

The Mackey Classic Padded Flash Noseband is a traditional padded cavesson noseband supplied with a flash strap, designed to fit an existing snaffle or general purpose bridle. It is best for riders who want to replace a worn noseband or convert a plain cavesson bridle to a flash set-up for schooling, hacking and jumping.

The padded nosepiece adds cushioning across the front of the face, while the flash strap fastens below the bit to help keep the mouth quietly closed. The flash can be removed if you prefer to ride in a plain cavesson, making this a flexible everyday option for the yard.

How to Use

  1. Remove the existing noseband from your bridle by sliding the headpiece strap out of the browband loops.
  2. Thread the new noseband headpiece through the browband loops and back under the cheekpieces.
  3. Fit the cavesson so it sits roughly two fingers below the cheekbone.
  4. Fasten the cavesson so you can slide two fingers between the leather and the nose.
  5. Pass the flash strap around the nose, below the bit, and buckle it snugly but not tightly.
  6. Check that the flash does not pull the cavesson down onto the soft part of the nose, then tuck all strap ends into the keepers.

FAQ

What size noseband do I need?
Measure your current noseband from the buckle to the end holes and compare it with your horse's head size - pony, cob or full. Head shapes vary a great deal, so measuring is far more reliable than guessing from breed alone.

Can I use this without the flash strap?
Yes. The flash strap can be removed so the noseband is used as a plain padded cavesson.

Will it fit any bridle?
It is designed to fit standard snaffle and general purpose bridles where the noseband headpiece passes through the browband loops. Check your bridle uses this common arrangement before ordering.

How tight should the flash be?
Snug enough to discourage the mouth from opening, but loose enough that the horse can move its jaw and the cavesson is not dragged down onto the nasal cartilage.

How do I care for it?
Wipe clean after use, wash with saddle soap and condition the leather periodically. Inspect stitching, keepers and buckles regularly and replace the noseband if anything shows wear.

Is it suitable for competition?
Padded flash nosebands are widely used for schooling and jumping. Always check the current rules of your discipline and governing body for permitted tack before competing.
