What is the Battles range?
The Battles range covers traditional animal husbandry products — the sort of tins, bottles and tubs that sit on the shelf of a working tack room or farm store. The emphasis is on simple, single-purpose products in honest pack sizes: sulphur powder, epsom salts, glycerine, surgical spirit, copper sulphate, caustic soda and white petroleum jelly, alongside ready-mixed creams, sprays and drenches.
Because the products are straightforward, they tend to be used across horses, cattle, sheep and poultry. Always check the label for the species and use it is intended for before you open it.
Which Battles product should I start with?
If you keep one Battles item on the yard, most people choose Battles Udder Cream (400gm from £7.78). It is a soft, greasy barrier cream that suits rubbed girth areas, chapped heels and dry patches, and it goes a long way. From there, Battles Pig Oil (1 Litre from £8.52) is the classic feather and mane conditioner, and Battles Iodine Spray (500ml from £8.07) covers routine cleaning of hooves and minor grazes.
For bigger yards, several lines step up in size: Udder Cream runs to 1.1Kg (£17.53) and 5KG (£60.43), Battles Animal Shampoo to 2 Litre (£15.90), and Battles Dairy Fly Spray comes in a 4.5 Litre pack (£30.33) with a matching Battles Trigger Sprayer at £4.90.
What is pig oil actually used for?
Despite the name, pig oil is a stable staple for horses. It is a light mineral oil used to condition feather, manes and tails, help mud slide off rather than cake on, and make grooming easier. Many people mix it with Battles Sulphur Powder (1.5Kg from £11.53) to make the traditional pig oil and sulphur blend applied to feathered legs. Battles Pig Oil starts at £8.52 for 1 Litre.
Do I need iodine solution or iodine spray?
A spray is ready to use and quicker for hooves and small areas — Battles Iodine Spray (500ml, £8.07) or the stronger Battles 7% Strong Iodine Spray (500ml, £13.09). A solution gives you more control and is more economical if you use a lot: Battles Iodine Solution 1 Litre is £13.52 and Battles Strong Iodine Solution 500ml is £13.26. Follow the label for dilution and take care with fabrics — iodine stains.
What does Battles offer poultry keepers?
There is a full poultry sub-range. Battles Poultry Oyster Shell (1.5Kg £3.08, 3Kg £4.36) and Battles Poultry Mixed Grit (1.5Kg £3.19) cover the basics of grit and shell. Battles Poultry Garlic Granules start at £5.82 for 500gm, Battles Poultry Cider Vinegar & Garlic is £6.15 for 1 Litre, and Battles Poultry Drink is £6.15 for 500ml. For housekeeping there is Battles Poultry House Disinfectant & Cleaner (1 Litre, £7.58), Battles Poultry Louse Powder (750gm, £15.68), Battles Poultry Scaly Leg Formula (250ml, £6.30) and Battles Poultry Easyverm (250gm, £9.01).
What should I keep in a lambing or calving box?
Battles Lamb Reviver & Tonic (30Ml, £3.06) and Battles Twin Lamb Drench (150ml £4.72, 500ml £9.90) are the usual starting points, with Battles Obstetrical Lubricant (500ml with dispensing tube, £6.45; 5 Litre, £19.51) and Battles Ovaloid Capsules (pack of 100, £32.00) alongside. These are husbandry aids that support routine care — they are not a substitute for veterinary treatment, and anything you are unsure about should go to your vet first.
Frequently asked questions
Which size of Battles Udder Cream should I buy?
For one or two horses the 400gm tub (£7.78) usually lasts a season. Yards using it daily, or on cattle as well, tend to move to the 1.1Kg tub (£17.53) or the 5KG tub (£60.43), which works out cheaper per kilo. All three sizes are currently in stock.
Is pig oil used on its own or mixed with sulphur?
Both. Battles Pig Oil (1 Litre, £8.52) can be brushed on neat to condition feather and help shed mud. The traditional mix adds Battles Sulphur Powder (1.5Kg from £11.53) stirred into the oil before application. Shake or stir well, apply sparingly, and keep it off tack and rugs.
Which Battles iodine strength do I need?
For routine hoof and skin cleaning, the standard Battles Iodine Spray (500ml, £8.07) is the easiest option. Where a stronger preparation is wanted, Battles 7% Strong Iodine Spray is £13.09 for 500ml and Battles Strong Iodine Solution is £13.26 for 500ml. Battles Iodine Solution 1 Litre (£13.52) suits anyone who prefers to dilute and apply their own. Always follow the label and ask your vet if you are unsure which is appropriate.
Can I use these products on a wound?
Battles topical products such as Battles Gentian Violet Spray (240Ml, £6.14) and Battles Black Anti-Bacterial Powder (125G, £9.89) are husbandry aids for minor, superficial marks and general skin hygiene. They do not treat or cure infection. Any deep, dirty, bleeding or non-healing wound, or any animal that is lame or unwell, should be seen by your vet first.
Do you stock the Battles poultry range?
Yes. In-stock poultry lines include Battles Poultry Oyster Shell from £3.08 (1.5Kg), Battles Poultry Mixed Grit £3.19 (1.5Kg), Battles Poultry Garlic Granules from £5.82 (500gm), Battles Poultry Cider Vinegar & Garlic £6.15 (1 Litre), Battles Poultry Scaly Leg Formula £6.30 (250ml), Battles Poultry House Disinfectant & Cleaner £7.58 (1 Litre), Battles Poultry Easyverm £9.01 (250gm) and Battles Poultry Louse Powder £15.68 (750gm).
