Description
A Three Ring Dutch gag typically consists of four rings in total but with only three rings that you can actually attach the reins to, giving it the name. The top ring attaches to the cheek pieces of the bridle and you can attach the reins to any of the three lower rings to provide a variety of different leverage options. Also known as a continental bit, it works by raising the bit in the horse's mouth in a similar way to a traditional gag but without the same severity. Using the reins on the lower rings significantly increases poll pressure which is why we recommend using two reins or rounding's attached to a single rein when using them. This ensures that a correct contact can be maintained on the snaffle ring without poll pressure when needed. The double jointed mouthpiece with copper lozenge distributes pressure evenly over the tongue and bars of the mouth whilst reducing the nutcracker action of a single jointed bit. Copper is a warm metal which encourage the horse to salivate and mouth on the bit. Measurements As per our size guide the A & B measurements of this bit are as follows: 4.5" & 5" - A=16mm & B=145mm 5.5" - A=16mm & B=180mm Stainless Steel Horse Bits... Stainless steel bits are suitable for a wide range of horses and are available in many designs so that you can choose the right bit for your horse and discipline. Frequently Asked Questions
How many rings does the Premier Equine Three Ring Dutch Gag actually have, and which ones can the reins attach to?
The bit has four rings in total. The top ring attaches to the cheek pieces of the bridle, and the three lower rings are where you can attach the reins, giving you a choice of leverage options - hence the name Three Ring Dutch Gag.
What is the benefit of the copper lozenge in the mouthpiece?
The double jointed mouthpiece with copper lozenge distributes pressure more evenly over the tongue and bars of the mouth compared to a single jointed bit, reducing the nutcracker action. Copper is also a warm metal that encourages the horse to salivate and mouth on the bit.
Why is it recommended to use two reins or roundings with this bit?
Attaching the reins to the lower rings significantly increases poll pressure. Using two reins, or roundings attached to a single rein, allows the rider to maintain correct contact on the snaffle ring without applying poll pressure when it is not needed.
How does the Three Ring Dutch Gag differ from a traditional gag bit?
Like a traditional gag, it raises the bit in the horse's mouth, but it does so without the same degree of severity. It is also known as a continental bit.
What are the mouthpiece measurements for each size?
For the 4.5 inch and 5 inch sizes, measurement A is 16mm and measurement B is 145mm. For the 5.5 inch size, measurement A is 16mm and measurement B is 180mm.
What material is the bit made from?
The bit is made from stainless steel, which does not rust and is easy to clean, with a copper lozenge incorporated into the double jointed mouthpiece.
