Boots

Tall, jodhpur, country and yard boots, plus socks, boot care and kids' sizes — all in one place.

Children's riding boots need to do three jobs: keep small feet safe in the stirrup (a proper heel, always), survive the yard, and not break the bank while feet grow. The usual first boot is a jodhpur boot (short, easy to get on, worn with jodhpurs), with long boots for shows and bigger kids, and country or yard boots for mucking about in all weathers. Just Horse Riders stocks children's boots from toddler sizes up, from brands including Rhinegold, Brogini, Gallop, Shires and our own Englander Equestrian, from around £14.

In a hurry? For lessons and Pony Club, a zip-front jodhpur boot is the easy, safe choice — quick on and off, proper heel for the stirrup. Allow a thumb's width of growing room, no more, and expect to size up roughly once a year while they're growing.

Which boots for your child?

Type Best for
Jodhpur boots The classic first boot — lessons, Pony Club, everyday riding
Long / tall boots Shows and older children wanting the grown-up look
Country boots Warm, waterproof walking-and-yard boots
Yard boots Mucking out and wet-weather jobs

Getting the size right on growing feet

Fit with the socks they'll actually ride in, and allow about a thumb's width of room at the toe — enough to grow into, not enough to slop about. Zips or touch fastenings make life easier with little ones. And whatever the boot, it must have a defined heel — trainers and flat wellies can slide through a stirrup, so they're not safe to ride in.

Frequently asked questions

What boots does a child need to start horse riding?

A short jodhpur boot with a defined heel is the standard starter — safe in the stirrup, easy on and off, and comfortable around the yard. Riding schools generally ask for a small heel and smooth sole; trainers aren't safe to ride in.

How much growing room should kids' riding boots have?

About a thumb's width at the toe, fitted with riding socks. More than that and the foot moves in the boot, which rubs and feels insecure in the stirrup.

Can children ride in wellies?

Best not — most wellies have deep treads and a shallow heel, so the foot can wedge or slip through the stirrup. Keep wellies for the yard and use a proper riding boot (with a heel) for the saddle.

When are children ready for long boots?

Whenever they fit well and the child can manage them — many switch for showing or as teens. Until then, jodhpur boots (with half chaps if wanted) do the same job with easier sizing.
