How do you measure a dog for a coat?
The one measurement that matters most
Measure along the top line, from the base of the neck (where a collar sits) to the base of the tail. That back length is what almost every dog coat size refers to. Weatherbeeta and Rhinegold size in centimetres or inches — a 30cm back length means a 30cm coat. Digby & Fox, Joules, Kurgo and House of Paws use letter sizes, so check the size guide on the product page against your measurement.
What if my dog is between two sizes?
Go up for deep-chested, heavily-coated or growing dogs, and for anything worn over a fleece. Go down for very long, low dogs such as dachshunds, where a coat that is too big drags in the mud. If you are not sure, get in touch and our team will help you pick.
Should I also measure the chest?
Yes, if your dog is barrel-chested or unusually narrow. Girth decides whether the belly straps do up comfortably, and a coat that fits the back but pinches at the chest will rub behind the front legs.
What are drying coats and cooling coats for?
A drying coat is worn straight after a swim, a bath or a soaking walk. The absorbent fabric pulls water out of the coat so your dog is damp rather than dripping — handy in the car and much quicker than towelling. The Henry Wag Drying Coat and Drying Bag both do this job.
A cooling coat, such as the Easidri Cooling Coat, is soaked, wrung out and worn in warm weather; as the water evaporates it helps your dog stay more comfortable. How do I wash a dog coat without ruining it?
