Fly Masks & Fringes
A fly mask is a soft mesh hood that protects your horse's eyes, face and ears from flies, midges and UV glare while letting them see and breathe normally. They come with ears, without ears, with a nose flap for extra cover, and as lightweight UV and ride-on versions — plus simple fly fringes that clip to the browband. Just Horse Riders stocks them from brands including Shires, Premier Equine, Cashel, WeatherBeeta and Woof Wear, from around £3.

Which fly mask do I need?
| Type | Best for |
|---|---|
| With ears | Everyday all-round protection for face and ears |
| Without ears | Horses who dislike ear covers, or use under a bridle |
| With nose flap | Pink noses and muzzles prone to sunburn and bites |
| UV mask | Extra sun protection and light-sensitive eyes |
| Fly fringe | Light, low-cost browband fringe to flick flies off the face |
| Ride-on mask | Keeping flies off the face while you ride |
How should a fly mask fit?
A good fly mask sits clear of the eyes (the mesh held off the eyeball), covers the ears if it is an eared style, and fastens snugly but not tightly under the jaw. Most come in pony, cob and full — check the brand guide, and look for fleece-trimmed edges to help prevent rubbing.

Frequently asked questions
What does a fly mask do?
A fly mask is a soft mesh hood that shields the eyes, face and ears from flies, midges and UV glare, while letting your horse see and breathe normally. It reduces eye irritation and helps protect pink, sun-sensitive skin.
Can horses see through a fly mask?
Yes. The mesh is designed so horses can see clearly through it, and a good mask holds the mesh away from the eyes for comfort and unobstructed vision.
What size fly mask do I need?
Fly masks come in pony, cob and full (sometimes extra-full). Check the brand's size guide so the mask sits clear of the eyes and fastens snugly without rubbing.
Can my horse wear a fly mask in the field all day?
Yes, but remove it at least once a day to check the fit and the eyes, and keep the mesh clean so vision stays clear. Take it off if it gets wet or muddy.
