Airway and respiratory support for stabled horses, dusty yards and pollen season.

Respiratory supplements support clear airways and comfortable breathing — most often used for stabled horses in dusty environments, seasonal pollen sufferers, and horses recovering their sparkle after winter. The range covers daily herbal airway blends (menthol, eucalyptus, garlic and friends), pollen-season support, and soothing syrups for the occasional tickle. Just Horse Riders stocks them from brands including Dodson & Horrell, NAF, Science Supplements and Global Herbs, from around £3.

Advice from the Just Horse Riders team — last reviewed June 2026. A persistent cough, laboured breathing or nasal discharge needs your vet — supplements support healthy airways, they don't treat respiratory disease.

In a hurry? Fix the dust first — soaked or steamed hay, dust-free bedding and good ventilation do more for breathing than anything in a tub. Then a daily herbal airway supplement supports stabled horses through winter, and a pollen blend helps seasonal sufferers through summer.

Breathing support at a glance

Type Best for
Daily airway blend Stabled horses, winter yards, dusty forage
Pollen-season support Horses that puff and snort through summer
Soothing syrups The occasional tickly cough (vet first if persistent)
Garlic The traditional all-round airway and fly-season staple

Management does the heavy lifting

A horse's airways are happiest in fresh air. If yours coughs at the start of exercise or in the stable: soak or steam hay, switch to dust-extracted bedding, muck out while the horse is out, and ventilate the barn. Supplements then support the airways — but a cough that persists beyond a couple of weeks, laboured breathing at rest, or discharge means a vet visit, as equine asthma is common and manageable with the right plan.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my horse cough in the stable?

Usually dust — from hay, bedding or poor ventilation. Soak or steam hay, use dust-extracted bedding and improve airflow before reaching for a supplement. A cough that persists needs a vet check, as equine asthma is common and treatable.

What can I give a horse with summer pollen problems?

Pollen-support blends are designed to be fed through the season, alongside sensible management like avoiding freshly mown fields and turning out at lower-pollen times. If summer breathing is genuinely laboured, involve your vet.

Is garlic good for horses?

Garlic is the traditional yard staple for airway and fly-season support, and most horses eat it happily. Feed at recommended rates — excessive long-term feeding is not advised — and avoid it in horses with anaemia history.

When is a cough a vet job?

If it lasts more than a couple of weeks, comes with nasal discharge or laboured breathing, or the horse is dull or off feed — call the vet. Supplements support healthy airways; they are not a treatment for respiratory disease.
