Which Horseware fly rug is right for your horse?

The quickest way to choose is to start with your horse's size and how hard the rug has to work. A field horse that lives out through midge season needs something more robust than a rug that only goes on for a few hours at grass. The table below compares the Horseware fly rugs currently in stock.

Rug Best suited to From (in stock)
Horseware Amigo Integrated Fly Sheet An affordable everyday sheet for summer turnout £55.95
Horseware Amigo Bug Rug Standard horse sizes, general fly protection at grass £77.95

What about ponies and small natives?

Three cuts here are built for smaller horses. The Horseware Amigo Bug Rug Plus Petite (from £77.95) starts at 2ft 9, which suits foals, Shetlands and very small natives. The Horseware Amigo Bug Rug Pony (from £59.95) picks up from 3ft 9, and the Horseware Newmarket Pony Fly Sheet (from £103.95) covers 4ft 9 to 5ft 9. If your pony sits between two of those, the Horseware Amigo Bug Rug Plus Pony (from £86.95) has 5ft 0, 5ft 6 and 5ft 9 in stock. Not sure which cut fits? Get in touch and our team will help you work it out from your horse's measurements.

Do I need a hood as well as the rug?

A hood covers the head, ears and neck — the areas flies target hardest and the areas a standard sheet leaves open. Some rugs in this range are sold as a combo with neck cover included, and others take a matching hood bought separately: the Horseware Amigo Bug Rug Hood (from £29.95) and the Horseware Amigo Bug Buster Hood (from £32.95) are both stocked here. Check the individual product page for what is included before you add a hood, so you don't end up with two.

What about riding out in fly season?

The Horseware Amigo Flyrider (from £86.95) is designed to be worn while you ride rather than only in the field, which helps on hacks through woodland and along hedgerows where flies are worst. It is stocked in Small and Medium at the time of writing.

How do I measure for a fly rug?

Horseware rugs use UK sizing in feet and inches. Measure from the centre of your horse's chest, along the side of the body, to the point of the buttock — that measurement in feet and inches is your rug size. If you land between two sizes, most people size up for comfort in a mesh rug, because a fly rug that pulls across the shoulder will rub. A rug that is too big shifts and lets flies underneath, so it is worth measuring rather than guessing from a previous brand's size.

Horseware fly rug questions, answered

When should my horse start wearing a fly rug?

Most UK owners put fly rugs on once the weather warms and the first midges and flies appear — often from April or May — and keep them going until the first cold nights of autumn. If your horse reacts badly to bites, starting earlier in the season is sensible, because it is easier to prevent irritation than to settle it once the skin is already sore.

Which Horseware fly rug should I choose?

For everyday summer turnout, the Horseware Amigo Integrated Fly Sheet (from £55.95) or the Horseware Amigo Bug Rug (from £77.95) cover most horses. If your horse is hard on rugs or lives out full time, the Horseware Amigo Bug Buster (from £99.95) or Bug Buster Plus (from £127.95) are the tougher options. For a bigger, longer-backed horse, look at the Horseware Amigo Bug Rug XL Plus (from £112.95).

Do Horseware fly rugs come with a neck cover?

It varies by model, so always check the individual product page for what is included. Where a neck cover is not part of the rug, matching hoods are listed separately in this collection — the Horseware Amigo Bug Rug Hood from £29.95 and the Horseware Amigo Bug Buster Hood from £32.95. If you are unsure which hood matches your rug, get in touch and our team will help.

Can a fly rug help a horse with sweet itch?

A close-fitting fly rug supports a sweet itch management routine by putting a physical barrier between the midges and your horse's skin, and full-coverage designs with belly and neck protection help most. A rug is not a treatment, though: if your horse is already rubbing, has broken skin or open sores, speak to your vet first and use the rug as part of the plan they recommend.

How do I wash a fly rug?

Brush off dried mud first, then wash cool with a mild rug wash rather than household detergent. Skip fabric softener and bleach, as they can clog and weaken mesh, and let the rug dry naturally rather than tumble drying. Always follow the care label on your specific rug, and check the surcingles and leg straps for wear while it is off.

What if the size I order does not fit?

You have 90 days to return it. Try the rug on over a clean coat in a clean space so it stays saleable, and check the shoulder and chest before you turn out in it. UK orders over £50 ship free, and if you would like a second opinion on sizing before you order, get in touch and our team will help.
