Premier Equine Mediumweight Stable Rugs
Which Premier Equine mediumweight stable rug should you buy?
For most stabled horses, the Premier Equine Combo Stable Rug 200g at £135.00 is the sensible starting point: it is a 200g mediumweight, it comes in Navy and Black, and every size from 5ft 0 to 7ft 3 is currently in stock. If you want the cheapest way into the range, the Premier Equine Tuscan Stable Rug 200g is £77.40, though stock is now limited to a handful of sizes and colours. If your horse is clipped, thin-skinned or stabled somewhere draughty, step up to a neck-cover style such as the Premier Equine Stratus Stable Rug 200g with Neck Cover at £130.00.
Every rug on this page is a 200g fill — the middle band of stable rug warmth. Eight styles are in stock right now, priced from £77.40 to £169.20. The differences between them come down to three things: whether the neck is covered, which sizes are still available, and which colours you prefer.

What does "mediumweight" actually mean for a stable rug?
Stable rug warmth is described by the weight of the polyfill inside, measured in grams per square metre. Every rug in this collection is 200g, which sits in the mediumweight band — warmer than a lightweight or a plain stable sheet, cooler than a 300g or 400g heavyweight.
In practice, a 200g rug suits a clipped horse in a typical British winter stable, or an unclipped horse when the temperature dips but the barn is not bitterly cold. Because there is no waterproof outer, a stable rug is for indoor use only — it is not a turnout.
Do you need a neck cover?
A neck cover adds warmth over the crest and shoulders, which matters most for a fully clipped horse or one that habitually stands with its head over the door in a draught. Six of the rugs here cover the neck: the Stratus, Hydra, Lucanta and Stable Buster are sold with a neck cover, and the Combo Stable Rug 200g and Domus 200g Combo Stable Rug are combo styles.
If your horse is unclipped, trace clipped, or lives in a warm American barn, a plain-neck rug like the Lucanta Demi Stable 200g at £149.40 or the Tuscan Stable Rug 200g at £77.40 is usually enough — and it is one less thing to fight with at 6am.
How do you measure your horse for a stable rug?
Measure in a straight line from the centre of the chest, along the side of the body, to the point of the rump — that measurement in feet and inches is the rug size. A 16hh horse commonly takes 6ft 3 or 6ft 6, but breed and build matter more than height, so always measure rather than guess.
The sizes on this page run from 5ft 0 to 7ft 3 across the range. If your measurement lands between two sizes, going up is normally kinder on the shoulders than going down. Unsure which to order? Get in touch and our team will help.
How many stable rugs should you own?
Two is the usual answer for a horse that lives in over winter: one on the horse, one drying or being washed. If you only buy one, choose the rug with the widest in-stock size run so you can match it later — the Combo Stable Rug 200g at £135.00, the Stratus at £130.00 and the Hydra at £165.60 all have their full 5ft 0 to 7ft 3 range available.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 200g stable rug warm enough for winter?
For most stabled horses in the UK, yes. A 200g mediumweight is the standard winter stable rug for a clipped horse in a normal barn or block. If your horse is fully clipped, elderly, or kept somewhere genuinely cold and draughty, add a neck cover or layer a liner underneath rather than jumping straight to a heavyweight — a horse that sweats under too much rug is worse off than one that is slightly under-rugged.
What is the cheapest Premier Equine mediumweight stable rug you stock?
The Premier Equine Tuscan Stable Rug 200g at £77.40 is the lowest priced rug in this collection. Stock is limited to selected sizes between 5ft 9 and 6ft 6 in Burgundy, Navy and Green. If your size has gone, the next steps up are the Stratus Stable Rug 200g with Neck Cover at £130.00 and the Combo Stable Rug 200g at £135.00, both of which have the full 5ft 0 to 7ft 3 run in stock.
Can I use a stable rug for turnout?
No. Stable rugs are not waterproof, so they are for indoor use only. Once wet, the fill loses its warmth and sits cold against the horse. If your horse goes out, you need a separate waterproof turnout rug — a stable rug can sometimes be layered underneath a turnout as an extra liner, but it should never be the outer layer in the field.
What is the difference between a combo rug and a rug with a neck cover?
Both cover the neck; the difference is how. A combo, such as the Premier Equine Combo Stable Rug 200g at £135.00 or the Domus 200g Combo Stable Rug at £167.40, is designed as a single piece, and the Lucanta 200g Stable Rug with Neck Cover at £169.20 also comes with its neck cover attached. The rugs supplied with a detachable neck cover — the Stratus at £130.00, the Hydra at £165.60 and the Stable Buster at £169.20 — give you the option of running them with or without the neck depending on the weather.
What sizes do these Premier Equine stable rugs come in?
Across this collection the sizes run from 5ft 0 to 7ft 3. The Stratus Stable Rug 200g with Neck Cover, the Combo Stable Rug 200g, the Lucanta Demi Stable 200g and the Hydra 200g Stable Rug with Neck Cover all have that complete range in stock. Measure from the centre of the chest to the point of the rump to find your size, and if you are between two, size up.
How should I wash and store a mediumweight stable rug?
Always follow the care label on the rug itself. As a general rule, brush the worst of the mud and hair off first, wash cool with a rug-specific detergent rather than household washing powder, and never tumble dry the fill. Store it clean, completely dry and somewhere mice cannot reach it. A rug put away damp will come out of the summer smelling and with the fill matted.
