Women's casual riding clothing covers the tops you actually live in around horses – tees, polos, base layers, sweatshirts and hoodies that work for mucking out, schooling and the school run alike. The choices that matter are fabric (cotton-feel casual versus sweat-wicking technical), warmth (single tee, brushed base layer or hoodie on top) and fit – riding tops are usually cut closer than high-street casual so they don't flap or ride up in the saddle. Choosing women's casual riding clothing

Getting the size right
Sizing is the main thing that catches people out, because each brand labels it differently. Weatherbeeta and Dublin use Ladies sizes with a dress-size hint (Small/10, Medium/12 and so on), LeMieux uses plain UK dress sizes 6–18, and brands like Gallop and Hy run X-Small to X-Large. Check the size chart on the individual product page rather than assuming your usual letter size carries over. If you are between sizes, stay true to size for a base layer – it is meant to fit close – and go up a size for a sweatshirt or hoodie you will layer over other tops.
Making yard clothes last
Yard tops get washed more than anything else you own, so it is worth buying ones that cope. Technical fabrics wash cool and usually dry overnight on a hanger – handy if you ride most days. Skip fabric softener on wicking tops, as it can coat the fibres and stop them moving sweat properly, and close any zips before washing so they don't chew the fabric. Cotton sweatshirts and hoodies shrug off most abuse; just expect hay to come out of the pockets for weeks.

Frequently asked questions
Do women's riding tops come up small?
They often feel it, because riding tops are deliberately cut closer to the body than high-street casual wear – a close fit stops fabric flapping or riding up in the saddle. Sizing also varies between brands, so check the size chart on each product page against your measurements. If it still isn't right when it arrives, you have 90 days to return it.
Can I ride in a normal casual top, or do I need a technical one?
You can ride in anything comfortable that doesn't restrict your arms. Technical tops earn their keep when you work up a sweat – they stretch with you and dry quickly instead of clinging – so most riders keep casual tees for yard jobs and wear a technical top or base layer for schooling.
What should I wear for winter yard mornings?
Layers beat one thick top. Start with a brushed or thermal base layer, add a mid-layer or hoodie, then a jacket you can shed once mucking out warms you up. Fitted layers underneath mean you can still ride without changing – just peel off the outer layers first.
How should I wash technical riding tops?
Cool wash, no fabric softener, and air dry – most technical fabrics are dry by morning on a hanger. Softener can coat wicking fibres and make the top feel sweatier over time, and a hot tumble dry is the quickest way to shorten its life.
