Clipper or trimmer — which do I actually need?

This is the question we get asked most, and the answer is usually simpler than people expect. A clipper is built to take a full coat off a whole horse; a trimmer is a small, light, low-noise machine for detail work. If you only ever tidy a bridle path, whiskers, ears and the backs of the fetlocks, a trimmer will do everything you need and cost a fraction of the price. If your horse is in work through winter and sweating up, you need a proper clipper.

Which Liveryman trimmer should I buy?

All three trimmers do the same job — the difference is how much work you're asking of them.

• Liveryman Robin Trimmer — £19.95. The one we point most people towards first. Small, light and cheap enough to keep in the grooming box for the odd tidy-up before a lesson or a show.
• Liveryman Nova Trimmer — £59.95. The middle option if you trim regularly rather than occasionally, or your horse's coat is thick enough that a very small trimmer struggles.
• Liveryman Classic Trimmer — £97.74. The one to choose if you're doing several horses, or you want the tidiest possible finish for the show ring.

What's the difference between the 1.6mm and 2.4mm Harmony Plus blades?

The Harmony Plus comes two ways, at the same £259.95, and the only difference is the blade fitted:

• The narrow 1.6mm blade cuts closer, leaving less coat behind, and the narrower head is easier to steer round legs, elbows and the shoulder.
• The wide fine 2.4mm blade leaves slightly more coat on and covers more ground per pass, so it's quicker across big flat areas like the barrel and quarters.

As a rule of thumb: if your horse lives out or is only in light work, leaving a little more coat on with the 2.4mm is the kinder choice. If the horse is clipped out, stabled and rugged, the 1.6mm gives the sharper, closer finish.

Do I need a battery pack as well?

Battery packs are worth thinking about before you clip rather than halfway through. There are three on this page and they are not interchangeable — each one matches its own clipper:

If you clip more than one horse in a session, a spare battery is usually the single best upgrade you can make — running out of charge with half a horse done is the most common frustration riders tell us about.

How do I get a good clip at home?

Start with a genuinely clean, dry coat

Clippers don't cut grease and mud, they clog on it. Wash or thoroughly groom the horse and let the coat dry completely first. Half an hour of extra preparation saves an hour of fighting blunt-feeling blades.

Let the horse get used to the noise

Switch the machine on away from the horse, let them hear it, then rest the back of your hand and the body of the clipper against the shoulder before you start cutting. Trimmers are smaller and generally quieter than full clippers, which is why many people introduce a young or worried horse to trimming first.

Work against the coat, in long overlapping strokes

Clip against the direction the hair grows, keep the blade flat to the skin, and use long, steady, slightly overlapping strokes rather than short jabs. Take extra care over bony areas and pull the skin taut on loose bits like the elbow.

Oil and cool the blades regularly

Stop every ten minutes or so, brush the hair out, add a few drops of clipper oil and let the blades cool. Blades that get hot both cut badly and become uncomfortable for the horse.

Rug up afterwards

A clipped horse has lost their insulation, so have the right weight of rug ready before you start — especially if they live out or the weather is about to turn.
