What is the difference between a numnah, a saddle cloth and a half pad?
People use the words loosely, so here is how we separate them:
- Numnah — shaped to follow the outline of the saddle, so very little fabric shows around the edge. The Cotton Quilted Numnah and Luxe Fur Numnah are both shaped.
- Saddle cloth or saddle pad — usually square or rectangular and sits proud of the saddle. The Cotton Quilted Saddle Cloth is the saddle-cloth version of the quilted numnah, in the same 11 colours.
- Half pad — a shorter pad used on top of a numnah or cloth to add cushioning or shims, such as the Interchangeable Trimmed Half Pad.
For most riders the honest answer is that shaped versus square is a look-and-preference decision. Cushioning, fit and cleanliness matter far more than the outline.
What size numnah do I need — pony, cob or full?
Rhinegold sizes here run pony, cob and full, and the size you need follows your saddle rather than your horse's height. As a rough guide, pony suits small saddles up to around 16 inches, cob suits 16 to 17 inches, and full suits 17 inches and up — but check the size guide on the product page, because dressage cloths are cut longer than general purpose ones.
Whichever size you pick, the pad should sit clear of the spine and wither with the saddle on, and extend a little beyond the saddle panels front and back. If it is pulled tight down onto the withers once you are on board, it is too small or has not been lifted into the gullet before girthing up.

How do I look after a numnah?
Give it a quick brush once it is dry to lift off hair and dried sweat, and wash it regularly following the care label on the product — hot washes and fabric softener are what usually ruin quilting and touch-tape straps. Dry it flat rather than over a hot radiator, and keep at least two in rotation so one is always clean. Check the underside for flattened or rubbed patches: uneven wear is often the first sign that the saddle needs looking at.
