How to Use
- Check the horse's legs are clean and dry before fitting, and brush off any grit or sand.
- Place the boot on the front leg so the moulded strike area covers the tendon and the top edge sits clear of the knee.
- Fasten the top strap first, then work downwards, keeping the tension even on each strap.
- Check you can slide a finger between the boot and the leg so the fit is secure but not tight.
- Remove the boots after work, rinse or wipe off mud and sweat, and detach the neoprene lining if it needs washing.
- Allow the boots and lining to dry naturally away from direct heat before the next ride.
FAQ
What are tendon boots used for?
Tendon boots are fitted to the front legs to protect the tendon area from strikes by the hind hooves, as well as from knocks against poles and fences during schooling and jumping.
What size do I need for my horse or pony?
Measure the length of the cannon bone and check the boot sits below the knee with the strike pad over the tendon. Fine-limbed ponies and youngsters usually take the smaller size, while cobs and heavier horses generally need the larger size. If in doubt between sizes, choose the size that lets all three straps fasten without pinching.
Can the lining be removed?
Yes. The perforated neoprene inner lining is detachable, so you can use the boots with or without it and wash the lining separately.
How do I clean the boots?
The faux leather outer is easy to wash and clean. Rinse or wipe off mud and sweat, wash the removable lining separately if needed, and leave everything to air dry away from direct heat.
Are these boots for the front or hind legs?
Tendon boots are shaped for the front legs. Use matching fetlock boots if you also want protection behind.
How tight should the straps be?
Fasten the elasticated straps firmly enough that the boot cannot slip or rotate, but loosely enough that you can slide a finger between the boot and the leg.
