The Waldhausen Anti-Fly Rug Zebra is a fine mesh fly rug that protects horses and ponies from biting and nuisance insects during summer turnout. Its black and white zebra design deters insects, which makes it more effective at protecting the horse than a standard plain fly rug, and it is best for horses turned out in fly-heavy fields, midge-prone paddocks or anywhere summer insects are a daily problem.

The rug is cut with a tail flap and belly flap for extended coverage, and is fitted with double front fasteners, a shoulder gusset, a fillet string and leg straps so it stays in place while your horse grazes, rolls and moves about the field.

How to Use

1. Measure your horse from the centre of the chest, along the side of the body, to the point of the buttock, and match that measurement to the size chart.
2. Undo the leg straps and fillet string, fold the rug and lay it over the withers, then unfold it back towards the tail.
3. Fasten the double front fasteners first, checking you can slide a flat hand between the chest and the rug.
4. Clip the leg straps, crossing them between the hind legs so they link through one another, leaving roughly a hand's width of slack.
5. Attach the fillet string under the tail and check the belly flap sits flat and is not twisted.
6. Check daily for rubs at the shoulder and wither, and remove the rug regularly to groom and inspect the coat.

What size fly rug do I need?
Measure from the centre of the chest, along the body, to the point of the buttock. If your horse sits between sizes, or is a broad cob or native type, size up - a rug that is too tight across the shoulder is the most common cause of rubbing and returns.

Will the rug stay on while my horse rolls?
The double front fasteners, crossed leg straps and fillet string are designed to hold the rug in position during normal turnout, grazing and rolling. Adjust the straps so they are snug but not tight.

Does it cover the neck, ears and face?
No. This is the body rug only. To protect the neck, ears and eyes, combine it with the matching Waldhausen neck piece and fly mask, sold separately.

How do I wash a fine mesh fly rug?
Brush off dried mud, then rinse or machine wash cool on a gentle cycle. Drip dry away from direct heat and avoid tumble drying, which can damage the mesh.

Can it be worn in wet weather?
It is a mesh fly rug, not a waterproof turnout rug, so it offers no rain protection. Use a waterproof rug if the weather turns and allow the mesh to dry fully before it goes back on.
